University Police warn students about scam artist

The Wake Forest University Police department is issuing a warning about a suspicious man believed to be a scam artist who is targeting Wake Forest students.

On three occasions between Aug. 31 and Sept. 19, the man approached students living at various university-owned residences located off campus. In each instance, students said the man came to the door of the residence, claimed that he was locked out of his car and asked to come inside and use the phone.

On two occasions, students allowed the man inside their residences. After the man used the phone, he asked for money and a ride. Each student gave the man a ride to different locations and gave him cash totaling $67.

The student who did not let the man inside said that he heard a car start shortly after the man left.

In each case, the students approached by the man were graduate and professional school students. The man alleged that he was also a graduate school student.

The man is described as black, 5 feet 9 inches tall, weighing approximately 130 pounds and in his late 20s to early 30s.

Students are advised to call University Police at 758-5911 if a man fitting this description approaches them and makes similar or other suspicious requests. University Police ask that students do not attempt to confront the man themselves, but immediately notify University Police, instead.

Anyone with information that may assist University Police is encouraged to contact University Police at 758-5911 or to call Campus Crime Stoppers at 758-4477.
