Classical guitar’s growth celebrated in new concert series

“Today we have a population of well-trained musicians passing along the traditions of the classical guitar at every level of the educational process, from middle school to universities,” says Dixon, a Chilean-American classical guitarist and senior lecturer in music.

Showcasing and celebrating the rising interest in classical guitar, the music department and the Piedmont Guitar Society are teaming up at the Fall Choral Concert on October 22. The event is part of the new Wake Forest Guitar Series and will feature guest artist Carlos Perez, a virtuoso guitarist from Chile.

Dixon and her students will share the stage with Perez for two sets during the concert. Perez also will teach a master class during his visit. The concert will also feature the Wake Forest Concert Choir and the Collegium Vocal Ensemble.

“Carlos is a master of the instrument; my students will benefit from his experience as a soloist and a chamber musician,” Dixon says. “He is not only an incredibly talented guitarist, he is also very good at teaching students how to improve their skills. He inspires us with his passionate playing and is a role model for success in the musical arena.”

The concert will be held in Brendle Recital hall, beginning at 7:30 p.m. Tickets will be on sale at the door for $10 for general admission. The event is free to Wake Forest faculty, staff and students.
