WFU Secrest Series event to celebrate Rev. Martin Luther King Day

The Secrest Artists Series will present Tonality, vocal ensemble on Monday, Jan. 20 at 7:30 p.m. in Wait Chapel as part of Wake Forest University and Winston-Salem State University’s annual collaborative celebration to honor the legacy of Rev. Martin Luther King Jr.

During the concert, Tonality will be joined by the Winston-Salem State University Singing Rams, the Wake Forest University Chamber Choir and a string quintet from Wake Forest University’s Symphony Orchestra.

Tonality and its founder and Artistic Director, Andrew Lloyd Blake, celebrated their first GRAMMY® award win in 2024 and were recently nominated for a 2025 GRAMMY® in the Best Arrangement, Instrumental, or A Capella category.

Tonality’s Mission

Blake, a 2010 Wake Forest alumnus, imagined Tonality as an ensemble that would represent the diverse cultures and ethnicities in the Los Angeles area. Within a year of its formation, Tonality’s mission evolved to use its collective voices to present concerts on themes of social justice in hopes of acting as a catalyst toward empathy and community activism.

Pre-Concert Talk

A pre-concert talk by Claire Crawford, assistant professor of politics and international affairs and the Program of African American Studies at Wake Forest. Crawford will be held at 6:40 p.m. ahead of the performance in Wait Chapel.
