Wake Forest University is collecting disaster relief items for eastern North Carolina residents impacted by Hurricane Matthew and its aftermath.

“The Wake Forest family has been called to serve in the spirit of Pro Humanitate and, as an institution, we support all the communities we touch,” said Mary Tribble (’82), senior advisor for engagement strategies in the Office of Alumni Engagement. “In light of the devastation of Hurricane Matthew to the eastern part of the state, we’re tapping into the power of our Wake Forest family to gather resources to help.”

Donations will be accepted Friday, Oct. 14 and Saturday, Oct. 15 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. in Off Campus Lot A, located on Long Drive across from Winston Salem First Assembly near the Polo Road entrance to campus.

The shelter’s greatest needs are for the following items:

  • Pillows
  • Blankets
  • Baby formula
  • Women’s underclothes

A list of more disaster relief necessities, including non-perishable food items, is available here. Wake Forest will transport related supplies.

On Monday, Oct. 17, the Office of Alumni Engagement will drive supplies to a Red Cross shelter in Tarboro, N.C. where there are more than 400 people displaced from their homes. Members delivering relief items of the Office of Alumni Engagement will depart campus Monday at approximately 8 a.m.

For those wishing to volunteer time or donate to relief efforts, the North Carolina VOAD (Voluntary Organizations Active in Disaster) has links to agencies supporting disaster relief.

Hurricane relief items will be delivered by the Streakin’ Deacon, a 42-foot, Wake Forest-branded recreation vehicle that will travel the state of North Carolina over the course of the next year.

The Streakin’ Deacon, operated by the Office of Alumni Engagement, serves as a meeting place for Wake Forest alumni and friends, as well as a vehicle for Pro Humanitate efforts such as this one.
