Wake Forest’s Collegium Musicum to Perform

The Wake Forest University music department will present a concert of 16th and 17th century German music by the Collegium Musicum Vocal and Instrumental Ensembles on Thursday, Nov. 14, at 8 p.m. in Brendle Recital Hall.

The program will feature choral music by German composer Heinrich Schutz, including a double chorus motet entitled “Ich hebe men Augen auf” with soloists and organ continuo. Accompanied by the Collegium Musicum Instrumental Ensemble, the vocal ensemble also will perform Schutzís masterwork, “Historia der Geburt Jesu Christ.” The 35-minute setting of Biblical texts describes the birth of Jesus Christ, the holy familyís flight to Egypt to escape Herodís persecution, and their return to Israel. The student vocal ensemble will be joined by tenor Richard Heard, a Wake Forest faculty member, and Susan Bates, Wake Forest organist.

The Collegium Musicum Vocal Ensemble also will present secular pieces by Hans Leo Hssleer, Michael Praetorius and Erasmus Widmann.

The Collegium Musicum Instrumental Ensemble will perform works by Praetorius, Paul Hofhaimer, Ludwig Senfl and Heinrich Isaac, using reproductions of early instruments such as recorders and violas da gamba.

The ensembles are directed by Brian Gorelick, director of choral ensembles, and Stewart Carter, professor of music.

Admission is free. For information, call 759-5026.
