Student Chorus to Sing at White House
Members of Chi Rho, a men’s a cappella chorus at Wake Forest, will perform at the White House on Sunday, Dec. 15. The group will sing for White House staff and cabinet members as part of a holiday reception. Chi Rho members will be available for interviews until they leave campus for Washington, D.C., on Saturday, Dec. 14. Chi Rho is a Christian chorus that derives its name from the first two letters of the Greek spelling of “Christ” and from the Greek symbol “XP” at the center of the university’s seal.
Passage to India: Students Volunteering in Calcutta
One day after celebrating Christmas with their families, 11 students will travel to India to volunteer at Mother Teresa’s Missionaries of Charity. From Dec. 26-Jan. 12, the students will help care for Calcutta’s poor, sick and dying in facilities run by Mother Teresa.
Lovefeast is Christmas Tradition
More than 2,300 students, professors, alumni and members of the community are expected to fill Wait Chapel for the annual Christmas Lovefeast. The event begins at 8 p.m., Sunday, Dec. 8, but many will arrive early to enjoy the luminaries on the quad and the music of the Messiah Moravian Band. The university’s concert choir, flute choir and handbell choir will perform during the candlelight service.
Choral Concert Expected to Draw Crowd
Three Wake Forest University choirs will present a free holiday concert at 8 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 5, in Brendle Recital Hall. The Choral Union, the Collegium Vocal Ensemble and the Concert Choir will form a 100-voice chorus to sing Johann Franck’s “Be Thou with Me.” Directed by Brian Gorelick, the choirs also will sing familiar carols.
Students Host “Santa Saturday”
Nearly 90 children from Head Start and other community organizations will make decorations, bake cookies and play games with Wake Forest students at the annual “Santa Saturday” Christmas party Dec. 7. After sharing their wish lists, the children may select gifts for their families from a “shop” filled with donated gifts. Sponsored by the Volunteer Service Corps, the event runs from 1-3 p.m. in Benson University Center’s Pugh Auditorium.
Benson Center to Host Holiday Festival
Ten student groups, including the Wake Forest Gospel Choir, the Asian Student Interest Association, a sign language class and Agape, a women’s a capella ensemble, will perform at 8 p.m. tonight in Benson University Center, Room 401. Donations of canned goods will be collected at the door and dispersed to local charities.
Athletes to Play Santa
As Santa’s Helper volunteers, Wake Forest athletes will deliver Christmas presents to needy Winston-Salem children Sunday, Dec. 8 and Saturday, Dec. 14, beginning at 9 a.m. Founded in 1986 by a Wake Forest football player, Santa’s Helper expects more than 400 families to receive hand-delivered gifts this year from members of virtually every Wake Forest athletic team. The organization, which is still taking donations for this year’s efforts, is supported by local residents and civic groups. Call 759-5640 for more information.
