Students, President Support DWI Legislation
Wake Forest President Thomas K. Hearn Jr. and nearly 100 Wake Forest students will attend a press conference at the General Assembly building in Raleigh on Tuesday, April 22, to support new drunk driving legislation. Also attending will be Lt. Gov. Dennis Wicker and students and presidents from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, North Carolina State University and Duke University. Following the press conference, students will lobby legislators and attend a luncheon with them. That afternoon, students will be in the gallery of either the Senate or the House, depending on where activity on the legislation is taking place.
Matthew Alexander 5K Memorial Race
The Wake Forest ROTC is sponsoring a road race in memory of Matthew Alexander on Friday, April 25. Alexander, an ROTC cadet and rising senior at Wake Forest, was aboard TWA Flight 800 that crashed last summer. Race proceeds will help furnish a new classroom named in the late student’s honor. The 5K relay will begin at 4:30 p.m. and an individual 5K will begin at 5:30 p.m. Both races will begin near the athletic field across from the university’s Worrell Professional Center. Combat Mentality Helps Medical Marriages Survive Residency
In an article in the current issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association, Dr. Wayne Sotile, director of psychological services for Wake Forest’s cardiac rehabilitation program, says that marriages of resident physicians are at risk unless both doctors adopt a combat mentality to survive the grueling hours, extraordinary stress and time apart during medical training.
Forum to Address Critical Issues in Accountancy
James J. Leisenring, vice chairman of the Financial Accounting Standards Board, will discuss “Accounting for Derivatives: Searching for a Solution” during the Hylton Critical Issues in Accountancy Forum on Thursday, April 24. Leisenring will speak at 10 a.m. in the Benson University Center’s Pugh Auditorium. A panel discussion will follow at 11 a.m. with Leisenring and other accounting experts. The event is sponsored by the Wayne Calloway School of Business and Accountancy.
