Fifty years after it was created by students as a small campus radio station, Wake Forest University’s WFDD (88.5) will host its 50th anniversary celebration on Friday, May 22.
The 2-6 p.m. event at the station will honor the pioneers who founded the station as well as those who have helped with its development since its founding in 1948. The celebration will feature live classical and bluegrass music, refreshments and tours of the station.
In honor of the occasion, the Winston-Salem, High Point and Greensboro mayors have declared the day “Public Radio Day.” Jack Thomas, WFDD station manager from 1951-52, and Julian Burroughs, station manager from 1958-1981, are among the special guests expected to attend.
WFDD is now a 60,000-watt station broadcasting from a state-of-the-art facility to listeners in 32 counties. WFDD, North Carolina’s first National Public Radio station, broadcasts classical music, NPR news, and other programming. The station is located on the Wake Forest campus at 56 Wake Forest Drive (behind Kentner Stadium).
