Human and Labor Rights Advocate to Lecture at WFU

Michael Posner, executive director of the Lawyers Committee for Human Rights, will present “Labor Rights are Human Rights: Addressing Sweatshop Practices in the Apparel Industry” on Thursday, Jan. 21, at Wake Forest University.

Posner’s discussion, which is free and open to the public, will begin at 11 a.m. in the Scales Fine Arts Center, Room 102.

Posner, a member of the White House task force examining sweatshops worldwide, has led the Lawyers Committee for Human Rights since its inception in 1978. The organization seeks to protect and promote fundamental human rights and hold governments accountable to the International Bill of Human Rights.

Posner, who has led human rights fact-finding missions to more than 25 countries, has worked on issues dealing with Central America, the Philippines, Israel, Egypt, China and other countries.

In addition to his work with the Lawyers Committee, Posner is a visiting lecturer at Columbia University Law School, a regular commentator for Court TV and the author of numerous human rights articles for The New York Times, the Los Angeles Times, The Wall Street Journal and other publications.

Before joining the Lawyers Committee, Posner was an attorney in Chicago and worked for the International Commission of Jurists in Geneva, Switzerland.

Posner’s lecture is part of a series of events during Wake Forest’s Year of Globalization and Diversity, the university’s yearlong look at the world’s development into a more global community. For more information about the year, call 336-758-5788.
