Cuban string ensemble to perform Secrest Artists Series concert

The concert will begin at 8 p.m. in Brendle Recital Hall. The all-female, classical string ensemble is known well in their homeland, but has rarely performed in the United States.

The eight-member group includes three violins, two violas, a cello, a double bass and a percussionist. Their repertory ranges from classical string standards to music by contemporary Latin American composers.

Zenaida Romeu, the daughter and granddaughter of a dynasty of Cuban musicians, conducts them. Romeu, who founded the group in 1993, has also conducted Cuba’s National Symphony Orchestra and National Choir.

Known for playing from memory, Camerata Romeu has gained international acclaim for their performances in Spain, Mexico, Canada and South America. A Los Angeles Times reviewer noted the group’s “cleanly sculpted rhythms and explosive dynamic contrasts.”

The ensemble is performing at Wake Forest during a two-day Symposium on Cuba sponsored by the Romance languages department.

Tickets are $15 general admission and $12 for senior citizens and non-Wake Forest students. Admission for Wake Forest students is free. Contact the University Theatre box office at 336-758-5295. The box office is open from noon to 5 p.m. on weekdays.
