One-act plays directed by students to be performed April 15 and 16

The Wake Forest University Theatre Department will conclude its annual Studio Series of one-act plays directed by seniors who are theatre majors this month.

Performances will be held on April 15 at 7:30 p.m. and April 16 at 4:30 p.m. in the Ring Theatre inside Scales Fine Arts Center. Ali Ayala will direct “The Effect of Gamma Rays on Man-in-the-Moon Marigolds,” Lee Briggs will direct “The Dumbwaiter,” and Hillary Heard will direct “To the Dogs.”

“The Effect of Gamma Rays on Man-in-the-Moon Marigolds,” written by Paul Zindel, is about a family struggling to find beauty, hope, and connection in a seemingly chaotic world. The audience is allowed to glimpse into the lives of Beatrice and her daughters, Tillie and Ruth, as they prepare for Tillie’s science fair competition. Their interactions are humorous, touching, and often tragic as they seek to find growth amidst destruction.

“The Dumbwaiter,” written by Harold Pinter, is set in England in 1959. It tells the story of the cockney gangster underground. Two hitmen, Gus and Ben, have been
sent to a small house to wait in the basement for further instruction. Suddenly, they begin to receive eerie messages from the dumbwaiter and must figure out how to satisfy the force that is sending the messages.

“To the Dogs,” written by Djuna Barnes, is about the handsome and recently widowed Gheid Storm trying to break into the mansion of Helena Hucksteppe, a mysterious, single woman. But, before he can break in, he has to get past her dogs.

Tickets will be available at the door for $2. For more information, call the box office at 336-758-5295, or visit www.wfu.edu/theatre.
