The Anthony Aston Players at Wake Forest University will put on “Lear’s Daughters” in the Ring Theatre Sept. 26-28 at 7:30 p.m. Senior Sarah Wynne will direct the play.

Developed 16 years ago as a collaborative effort by the Women’s Theatre Group in Britain, “Lear’s Daughters” is a feminist flavored background story to Shakespeare’s “King Lear.”
The theatrical journey of “Lear’s Daughters” expresses the early life of the three princesses who later fight for the kingdom in Shakespeare’s tragedy. Goneril, Lear’s eldest daughter, is a young woman trying to find out what it is to be both an independent person and a daughter of the family. Regan, the king’s second daughter, represents the classic middle child—often overlooked and ignored. Cordelia, the youngest daughter who receives the most attention in Shakespeare’s play, is a lesser figure in this tale.
“Lear’s Daughters” is one of a number of modern takes on Shakespeare, from
Tom Stoppard’s play, “Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead” (1967) to John Updike’s novel, “Gertrude and Claudius” (2000). The theme has also appeared in Hollywood as evidenced by “Shakespeare in Love,” (1998) starring Gwyneth Paltrow and Joseph Fiennes.
