The Wake Forest University Theatre opens its fall Studio Series of one-act plays directed by Wake Forest theatre majors with performances of “Virtual Reality,” “The American Century” and “Hello Out There.” The performances will be held at 7:30 p.m. Sept. 12 and 4:30 p.m. Sept. 13 in the Ring Theatre of Scales Fine Arts Center.
“Virtual Reality,” written by Alan Arkin and directed by senior Alyssa Biber, tells the story of two men waiting for equipment to do an unspecified job. One man insists on doing a dry run inventory of the unknown contents of the expected crates. This begins a hilarious power struggle between imagination and reality that could put both their lives at stake.
Murphy Guyer’s “The American Century” is a joke in one act. A biting satire and absurd comedy, the play follows the story of a son who travels back in time to visit his hopeful, yet childless parents and tells them about the unexpected disasters awaiting them. The play is directed by Wake Forest senior Lindsey Hardegree.
“Hello Out There,” directed by senior Mike Kelly, is a play by William Saroyan. The plot is simple and bleak. A young man is in jail for an alleged rape. Emily, the cook at the small town jail where the young man is incarcerated, is attracted to him. He enlists her help to escape before the husband of his rape victim comes to the jail to lynch him.
