How do you take a small story and make it big? Two documentary film students started with a story about a man breaking the law by handing out peanut butter and jelly sandwiches to homeless people, and created the award-winning film, “Civil Indigent.”

Alumna wins leadership award

Catharine McNally (’06) recently received the Hearne Leadership award, which comes with a $10,000 prize, from the American Association of People with Disabilities. McNally, who is deaf, is both an advocate and entrepreneur, having developed captioned video tours for cellphones.

‘The 5th Quarter’ premieres

“The 5th Quarter,” a movie that pays tribute to Luke Abbate, whose brother Jon was a Wake Forest football player, premiered March 17. The movie showcases the support the Abbate family received from the football team and fans following Luke’s death. The 2006 team, predicted to finish last in the ACC, went on to the win the league title. The film opens to the public on March 25.

NAACP leader addresses school issues

Ben Jealous, the national president of the NAACP, said Monday night in a speech at Wake Forest that his organization is committed to fighting school re-segregation and disparities in the numbers of black and white students expelled from schools in North Carolina.

Debate sends 3 teams to nationals

Wake Forest is one of six schools to qualify three teams to the National Debate Tournament, which will be held later this month in Dallas. Juniors Michael Carlotti and Andrew McCarty led the way by finishing third at the district tournament.
