The lessons of Chile: Strong central government lessens effects of earthquake

Latin American scholar Peter Siavelis on the earthquake in Chile: "People want to make comparisons to Haiti, but the response in Chile is more like what we would expect in California or Japan.

The 8.8-magnitude earthquake that hit Chile on Feb. 27 was many times more powerful than the one that struck Haiti two months ago, but Professor of Political Science Peter Siavelis says Chile has many advantages as it begins its recovery efforts.

Building for tomorrow: Students join forces to build Ugandan schools

In the spirit of Pro Humanitate, a group of students have created a Wake Forest chapter of Building Tomorrow. The international non-profit organization raises money to build elementary schools in Uganda, where only 50 percent of the population completes primary school.

Professor waits to hear from Chile

Professor Peter Siavelis, who used to live in Chile, is waiting to hear if former colleagues there are safe after a massive earthquake hit the country on Saturday. The University is not aware of any faculty or students who were in the country at the time of the earthquake.

Homegrown answers for Africa

Associate Professor of Economics Sylvain Boko, an expert in economic development in Africa, worked with more than 20 other development experts for his newest book, "Back on Track: Sector-Led Growth in Africa and Implications for Development." The book advocates a new approach to fight poverty in Africa from the inside out, rather than rely on outside financial assistance.
