Wake Forest theatre to present modern translation of ‘Lysistrata’

The Wake Forest University Theatre will present a modern translation of Aristophanes’ comedy, “Lysistrata,” Sept. 29-30 and Oct. 4-8.

Translated by Jeffrey Henderson, the comedy centers around one woman’s determined fight to end a war that has dragged on for 20 years. She organizes the occupation of the treasury office and a conjugal strike among women from both sides to encourage the soldiers to turn their attention away from battle.

J.E.R. Friedenberg, director of Wake Forest’s theatre department, will direct the show. Because “Lysistrata” includes frank discussions about politics and sex, the show is not recommended for children.

Performances will be held at 8 p.m. on Sept. 29 and 30, and Oct. 4-7. An Oct. 8 matinee at 2 p.m. will also be offered.

Tickets are available at the box office weekdays from noon to 5 p.m., and at the ticket window one hour before performances. Credit card orders may be made by phone at 758-5295. Single ticket prices are $12 for adults and $5 for students.

The Wake Forest Theatre is also now selling season tickets for four Mainstage productions. This year’s season will include “Lysistrata,” “Biedermann & The Firebugs” by Max Frisch, “Off the Map” by Joan Ackerman, and “School for Scandal” by Richard Sheridan. Season tickets cost $36 for adults, $15 for students and $30 for senior citizens.
