UNC-TV to air WFU holiday choral concert Dec. 22 and on Christmas eve

UNC-TV will air the annual holiday choral concert held at Wake Forest University Dec. 22 at 8:30 and on Dec. 24 at 5:30 p.m. The concert was taped on Dec. 7. It features the Choral Union, Collegium Vocal Ensemble, Concert Choir and the Wake Forest Chorale led by Brian Gorelick, director of choral ensembles, in the Scales Fine Arts Center’s Brendle Recital Hall.

The Choral Union’s performance includes David Michael’s “Halleluja, The Saviour Lives,” and Praetorius’s “Lo How A Rose E’er Blooming, Lift Thine Eyes.” The Union also performs “There Shall A Star” by Mendelssohn, and a modern anthem by Paul Laubengayer.

The Collegium Vocal Ensemble presents Bach’s “O Little One Sweet,” Holst’s “Lullay My Liking” and Robert Shaw’s arrangement of “How Far Is It To Bethlehem.”

The Concert Choir begins with anthems by Edwin Fissinger and Francis Hagen. The group also performs Alf Houkom’s “The Rune Of Hospitality” and Jeffrey Van’s arrangement of “Away In A Manger” with Patricia Dixon accompanying on guitar. The group ends with “In the Bleak Midwinter” and “Pilgrims’ Hymn.”

The Wake Forest Chorale sings two chorales by Bach, Herbert Howell’s “Lovely A Spotless Rose” and “Once In Royal David’s City” by Gauntlett.

Together, for the first time in North Carolina, the Chorale and the Concert Choir sing Van’s “Treasures and Gifts” with Krista Duran, senior harpist, accompanying.

Carol singing for choirs and audience takes place in between sets and at the end of the performance.
