WFU police charge man with 1996 assault

Wake Forest University police have charged Shawn Randell Martin with a 1996 assault on a female student in a university residence hall.

Martin, 24 of Forsyth County, was charged May 24 with first-degree rape, first-degree kidnapping, first-degree burglary, and first-degree armed robbery. The warrants were served at the Forsyth County Detention Center. Martin is currently serving a prison sentence in North Carolina for a previous offense.

The arrest is in connection with an Oct. 5, 1996 incident, in which a man raped a Wake Forest student when she returned alone to her room. The man also stole money from the victim and the victim’s roommate, who was not present at the time of the assault.
