WFU celebrates Indian Festival of Lights
Wake Forest University’s Asian Student Interest Association (A.S.I.A.) and the Indo-US Association of Winston-Salem will co-host a Diwali celebration from 6 p.m.-11 p.m. Nov. 14 at Wake Forest in the Benson University Center, Room 401. This is the first time the university has collaborated with the community for this festival.
The event, which celebrates the Indian Festival of Lights, will feature entertainment performed by community members and students and faculty from Wake Forest, a catered dinner and an after-party.
Diwali, also known as Deepawali, signifies the beginning of the Indian New Year and is a celebration of life, joy and goodness. It is celebrated for five days beginning on the last day of the last month of the Indian lunar calendar. Each day, diyas (oil lamps) are lit to welcome Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth and prosperity.
The entertainment portion of the event which will be held from 6 p.m.-8 p.m. will feature more than 10 different performances, including singing, Indian dancing and a fashion show. A catered buffet dinner will be served from 8 p.m.-9 p.m., and following the dinner, D.J. Desi from Atlanta will provide music and entertainment for an after-party.
Tickets for Wake Forest students are free, but they must be picked up in advance at the Benson Center Ticket Office. All other tickets are available at the door. Tickets for Indo-US Association members are free. Tickets for non-member families are $30; a non-member individual ticket is $15, and non-Wake Forest students with ID are $10.
