Martha Napier, a Wake Forest University sophomore from Hinsdale, Ill., has organized a project that gives students a chance to express their political beliefs and reactions to the upcoming 2004 presidential election on an outdoor collage wall on the university’s Magnolia Court from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Nov. 1, the day before Election Day.
Her project, “Illitics: Illustrate Your Politics,” offers students a wall on which they can write their thoughts about the election, hang articles or things printed from the Internet, or express their political views in any other way that can be attached to the wall. Students are encouraged to bring their own materials, but Napier also plans to provide art supplies like red, white, blue and black paint, and other materials like newspapers and magazines.
“One student saw me hanging a flyer this week and asked if he could attach a toilet seat with a picture of the presidential candidate he opposes in the middle,” said Napier, a presidential art scholar. “I really want to bring political and election awareness to the Wake Forest campus as well as the Winston-Salem community. This project asks students to not just make their vote heard but to make it seen.”
Members of the media are invited to cover the creation of the collage wall and speak to students participating in the project. Napier will be available for interviews throughout the day Nov. 1.
