For 10 years, students at Wake Forest University have come to know security officer George McBride as “the friendly, white-haired man with the bowl of mints” who keeps watch nights in the foyer of Z. Smith Reynolds Library.
Sunday through Thursday, from about 6 p.m. until the library closes at 1 a.m., McBride sits at his desk by the library’s security detectors. Periodically, he looks up from his newspaper to greet those who take a mint from the green ceramic bowl engraved with the words “George’s Mints” perched on the corner of the desk.
Now, after a decade of keeping close watch over those who enter and exit to study, McBride is getting ready to check out of the library and begin a new chapter in his life – retirement.
In honor of McBride’s years of service, University Police will hold a reception at 3 p.m. April 29 in the Rhoda Channing Room of Z. Smith Reynolds Library. Media are invited to the event, which is open to Wake Forest students, faculty and staff.
McBride’s official retirement date is set for June 3.
