Advisory: Wake Forest students return from service trips

Eleven Wake Forest students traveled to Calcutta, India, to work with the Missionaries of Charity, help in orphanages and help with handicapped children. Another 11 students traveled to the Kayamandi Township of South Africa to provide computer training for disadvantaged local citizens, and a group of 11 students went to Vietnam to help build a school in Ben Tre Province near the Mekong Delta.

Two campus ministries sent groups to Mississippi to provide Katrina Relief. In mid-December, the Wake Forest Baptist Student Union sent 13 students to Pearlington, a town at least one month behind other towns in recovery. Students worked with the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship Disaster Response Team by helping victims salvage items from houses to be bulldozed, stripping a house to its framework to prepare it for rebuilding and helping an elderly couple remove debris and salvage personal items.

The 21 students who went on the other Gulf Coast trip, sponsored by the Wake Forest Catholic Community, will return to campus today. They traveled to the Pascagoula area and built a storage building at St. Peter the Apostle Catholic School, participated in activities for children and helped Catholic Social Services deliver relief supplies each day from Mobile to Pascagoula.
