Media Advisory: Wake Forest students awarded Fulbright Scholarships

• Allison Tyler Humphreys of Greenville, S.C., will teach in Indonesia.
• Grace Johnson of Champaign, Ill., will teach in Taiwan.
• Michael Lewis of Brownsboro, Ala., will teach in Germany.
• David Wescott of Potomac, Md., will teach in Korea.

Graduates (December 2008):

• Cameron Frothingham of Durham, N.C., will teach in Mexico.
• Jennifer Lynne Wilson of Alexandria, Va., will teach in Germany.

In addition, three seniors were selected as alternates:

• Catherine Hufnagel of Vienna, Va., is an alternate to teach English in Brazil.
• Matthew Higgins of Yardley, Pa., is an alternate for a Fulbright Graduate Study Scholarship in economic development in Hungary.
• Roman Irvin of Louisville, Ky., is an alternate to teach English in Chile.

The Fulbright Program is an international education exchange program established in 1946 and sponsored by the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs of the U.S. Department of State.

The Fulbright English Teaching Assistantships Program places U.S. students as English teaching assistants in schools or universities overseas, improving foreign students’ English language abilities and knowledge of the United States while enhancing the U.S. student’s own language skills and knowledge of the host country.

The Fulbright Program operates in more than 155 countries worldwide.  Forty-five Wake Forest students have received Fulbright Scholarships since 1993.

“The Fulbright Graduate Study Scholarships and English Teaching Assistantships provide unparalleled opportunity for young Americans to learn and serve abroad immediately or soon after college,” said Tom Phillips, director of the Wake Forest Scholars program.  “We congratulate all this year’s assistantship recipients and alternates.  We are proud that, with the generous help of a large campus committee of faculty and staff, over the past four years Wake Forest has been among the top U.S. institutions in the awarding of such grants.”
