The Wake Forest music department offers concerts and recitals throughout the spring 2012 season. Jazzy tunes, electronic sounds mixed with romantic violin, piano, soprano and double bass are on the schedule. Click the event link for full calendar listing and locations.

Mixing Electronic Sounds with Romantic Violin
March 20, 4 p.m.
Jacqui Carrasco, violin
Associate Professor of Music Jacqui Carrasco will highlight Argentine-born composer Mario Davidovsky’s skill in combining romantic violin style with sophisticated pre-recorded sounds to create a lush and beautiful modern masterpiece. Part of the Z. Smith Reynolds Lecture Series to be held in the library auditorium.

Faculty Recital: Sonatas and Interludes, Louis Goldstein, piano
March 20, 7:30 p.m.
In 1940, John Cage invented the prepared piano while looking for a way to make the piano sound like a drum ensemble. From 1946 to 1948, he composed one of the masterpieces of 20th-century piano literature—a magical sound garden. Scales Fine Arts Center, Room M208

Presidential Scholar: Jorge Méndez-Estrada, double bass
March 22, 7:30 p.m.
with Thomas Turnbull, piano, and Jacob Eichhorn, clarinet
Featuring Méndez-Estrada’s original transcription of Pablo de Sarasate’s “Zigeunerweisen,” Bottesini’s “Gran Concerto,” and the world premiere of a piece for double bass, clarinet and piano composed by Eichhorn

Senior Recital: Mary Beth Freitag, soprano

Featuring works by Handel, Hahn, Mozart, Schubert, Pasatieri, Wildhorn and Guettel

Concert Choir
March 27, 7:30 p.m.
Brian Gorelick, conductor
Choral works whose texts and music paint pictures of the ideal world, both physical and spiritual. The admission charge for this concert will help cover the choir’s travel expenses when the group takes its third international tour in 2013 to Chile and Argentina.

The Wake Forest Concert Choir, Collegium Vocal Ensemble, and the Wake Forest Chamber Choir will combine to present “A Spring Choral E-Concert.” The compositions chosen for the program will be enterprising, entertaining, eclectic and electronic.

University Wind Ensemble Concert
April 29, 3 p.m.

Kevin Bowen and Philip Morgan, conductors
Featuring guest composer-in-residence and clinician Nathan Daughtrey. Daughtrey, a native of Greensboro, N.C., has performed and held masterclasses and clinics around the country and abroad.

MAY 2012

University Orchestra Concert
May 2, 7:30 p.m.
David Hagy, conductor
Featuring winners of this year’s Concerto Competition. The program includes works by Mozart, Handel, Rachmaninov, Stravinsky, and Barber, as well as William Alwyn’s “Fanfare for a Festive Occasion and Beethoven’s Symphony No. 2.”
