Two Teachers to Receive $20,000 Awards

Wake Forest University will recognize two outstanding educators with $20,000 awards during opening convocation on Sept. 24 in Wait Chapel. The Waddill awards recognize outstanding Wake Forest alumni in the teaching profession. Annually, an elementary and secondary teacher are presented $20,000 each. In 1994, New York businessman David Waddill established the gift in honor of his father, Marcellus Waddill, who has taught mathematics at Wake Forest for 34 years.

Gala Premiere of `Since Dawn’ Set

Wake Forest composer-in-residence Dan Locklair has created the first musical composition based on “On the Pulse of Morning,” the poem Maya Angelou wrote for Bill Clinton’s 1993 presidential inauguration. “Since Dawn’ will be premiered by the Winston-Salem Piedmont Triad Symphony at 8 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 28, at Wait Chapel. Ms. Angelou will narrate the performance.

University to Announce Major Gift

A major new gift from the Z. Smith Reynolds Foundation to Wake Forest University will be announced at 10:30 a.m. Monday, Sept. 23, in Reynolda Hall’s main lounge. To make the announcement, Wake Forest University President Thomas K. Hearn will be joined by former 5th District congressman Stephen L. Neal, the foundation’s president, and Thomas W. Lambeth, the foundation’s executive director.
Tournament to Draw High School Debaters
Nearly 1,200 students representing 160 high schools across the country will gather at Wake Forest Sept. 27-29 to compete in the National Earlybird Forensics Tournament. For a complete schedule, contact the News Bureau.
