Carolina Baroque, a professional period instrument ensemble specializing in music from the 17th and 18th centuries, will perform at Wake Forest University’s Brendle Recital Hall at 8 p.m. Monday, February 2.
Titled “The Great Mr. Handel,” the program will include both sacred and secular music by Handel.
The concert will open with Trio sonata in G minor, Op. 2, No. 6, composed when Handel was in Italy (1707-1710). Two selections from Handel’s oratorio, “Solomon” are included, as well as an 18th century arrangement for solo harpsichord of the Sinfonia “The Arrival of the Queen of Sheba.” The soprano aria, “Haec est Regina Virginum” will feature Wake Forest professor of music Teresa Radomski.
After intermission, Carolina Baroque will perform two sacred works Handel composed in 1707 for the Feast of St. Anthony in Padua.
The five-member group includes Daniel Hannemann, harpsichord; Dale Higbee, recorders; Holly Maurer, viola da gamba; John Pruett, baroque violin; and Radomski, soprano. Recordings of Carolina Baroque’s concerts have been played on radio station WDAV in Davidson and WFDD, Wake Forest’s National Public Radio station.
During the concert, the music director Dale Higbee will offer brief commentary on the music and on the instruments, which are copies of those used in Handel’s time.
