Texas Foundation Contributes to Baptist Scholarship

The Hobby Family Foundation of Houston, Texas, has made its second annual gift of $37,500 to Wake Forest University to support the William Louis Poteat Scholarship program. The scholarships are awarded to students who are active members of Baptist State Convention or General Baptist Convention churches in North Carolina and who show promise of making vital contributions to their churches and communities.

Sixty-nine Wake Forest students received Poteat scholarships last year. Gifts from North Carolina Baptist churches and individuals cover about 10 percent of the cost; the university provides the remainder.

Wade Stokes, director of development for the new Wake Forest University School of Divinity and of fundraising for the Poteat awards, said that the Texas foundation’s support is being used to create an endowment.

Diana Poteat Hobby of Houston, a trustee of the Hobby Foundation, is a granddaughter of William Louis Poteat, president of Wake Forest from 1905 to 1927.

The Poteat scholarships are valued at $8,000 each.
