Reparations advocate David L. Horne will speak at WFU during King Day celebration

David L. Horne, a Pan African studies professor at California State University-Northridge and leading reparations advocate, will be the keynote speaker for Wake Forest University’s celebration of Martin Luther King Jr. Day. Other events will include a basketball tournament and a dance. All events are open to the public.

Horne will present “Evolutionary Progress through Revolutionary Awareness” on Jan. 21 at 7:30 p.m. in Wait Chapel. He is the executive director of the California African American Political Institute, co-chair of the Reparations Platform Coalition in Los Angeles and editor of The Journal of Pan African Studies and The Journal of African Studies. He also participated in the recent United Nations Human Rights Commission Conferences on Racism, Xenophobia and Related Intolerances.

Horne’s books include, “Straight To The Point: A Primer For A Logical Introduction To Critical Thinking” and “The State of the Race: A 21st Century Analysis of Black Americans.”

Gospel choirs from Wake Forest and Winston-Salem State University will join for a performance following Horne’s program.

This event is sponsored by the Wake Forest Office of Multicultural Affairs and the Winston-Salem State University Student Government Association.

On Jan. 19, the Fourth Annual Martin Luther King Jr. Invitational Basketball Tournament will be held in Reynolds Gym at 3:30 p.m. Intramural teams from Wake Forest, Winston Salem State, N.C. A&T University, Elon University, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and Johnson C. Smith University will participate. The tournament is free. Sponsors include the Wake Forest Office of Multicultural Affairs and the Wake Forest Campus Recreation Department.

Immediately following the tournament, the annual Gym Jam dance will be held in the Lower Gym at Reynolds Gym. Admission will be $3 at the door.
