WFU Music Department announces January-February concert calendar

Wake Forest University’s department of music will present nine concerts in January and February. All concerts are free and open to the public.

Jan. 20: “An Evening of Italian Song,” Brendle Recital Hall, 8 p.m.
Tenor Richard Heard, an associate professor of music at Wake Forest, and pianist Pamela Howland will perform the music of Italian composers, including Handel, Giuseppe Giordani, Giovanni Paisiello and Francesco Durante.

Jan. 28: Fortepiano Inaugural Recital, Brendle Recital Hall, 8 p.m.
Andrew Willis, associate professor of music at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, will perform an inaugural recital on Wake Forest’s new Regier/Walter Fortepiano. The piano is a modern replica built by Rodney J. Regier of Freeport, Maine and is based on those made in Vienna by Anton Walter in the 1780s and 90s. The program will include music by Muzio Clementi, Haydn, Mozart, C.P.E. Bach and Beethoven. Teresa Radomski, soprano and professor of music at Wake Forest, will also perform a cantata by Haydn.

Feb. 4: Holland & Corn, Brendle Recital Hall, 8 p.m.
Classical guitarists Murray Holland and Duane Corn will perform a guest recital featuring music for two guitars that draws its roots from the folk and popular music traditions of North, Central and South America.

Feb. 12: Senior Voice Recital, Brendle Recital Hall, 8 p.m.
Wake Forest student and baritone Christopher Magiera will perform an honors recital. The recital will cover all major periods in music history from baroque to 20th century, including selections by Handel, Schumann, Mozart and 20th century African-American composers.

Feb. 13: Benefit Concert for Cancer Services, Brendle Recital Hall, 3 p.m.
Contralto Diane Thornton accompanied by pianist Ruskin Cooper will perform a benefit concert sponsored by Wake Forest department of music and Cancer Services Inc. of Winston-Salem. Thornton, artist associate in voice at Davidson College, is a cancer survivor and critically-acclaimed operatic singer. She is performing her first local concert since becoming cancer-free as a way to thank Cancer Services for their support during her diagnosis and treatment. Donations will be taken at the door to benefit local cancer survivors and their families.

Feb. 18: Percussion Recital, Brendle Recital Hall, 8 p.m.
Wake Forest graduate, Peter Zambito will perform an alumni percussion recital.

Feb. 19: Senior Voice Recital, Brendle Recital Hall, 3 p.m.
Wake Forest student and soprano Sarah Reynolds will perform a senior voice recital. Music will include works by Handel, Mendelssohn, Mozart and Claude Debussy.

Feb. 20: Senior Clarinet Recital, Brendle Recital Hall, 3 p.m.
Wake Forest student Catherine Keen will perform an honors clarinet recital. Headlining pieces include major works by Brahms, Mendelssohn and Willson Osborne.

Feb. 25: Violin/Piano Recital, Reynolda House, 8 p.m.
Pianist Peter Kairoff, professor of music at Wake Forest, and violinist Kevin Lawrence, a professor at the North Carolina School of the Arts, will perform a recital featuring works by American composers Arthur Foote and William Bolcom as well as “Sonata in A” by Gabriel Fauré.

Feb. 26: Competitions in Musical Performance, Brendle Recital Hall, 1 p.m. and 6 p.m.
The 28th annual Christopher Giles and Lucille S. Harris Competitions in Musical Performance will be held. The open competition will be held at 1 p.m., and the piano competition will be held at 6 p.m. Snow date is Feb. 27.
