Seven WFU students & alumni awarded Fulbright Scholarships

Seven Wake Forest students and alumni have been awarded Fulbright Scholarships to teach English and conduct research during the 2023-2024 academic year.  

The Fulbright U.S. Student Program is the U.S. government’s flagship international educational exchange program, offering research study and teaching opportunities in over 160 countries. The Fulbright award is designed to facilitate cultural exchange and increase mutual understanding between the people of the United States and those of other countries. 

This year’s winners from Wake Forest’s Class of 2023 are:

  • Madeline Alexanian, who will travel to Spain as an English teaching assistant
  • Micah Porter, who will conduct research in Portugal
  • Declan Sander, who will travel to Germany as an English teaching assistant
  • Elise Wright (MA ‘23), who will travel to the Czech Republic as an English teaching assistant

Additionally: Lizzie Harlan has been named a Fulbright alternate to the Thailand English Teaching Assistant Program.

Other Wake Forest Fulbright winners are:

  • Alumna Ilse Schaeffner (‘21), who will conduct research in Switzerland
  • School of Medicine Student Emily (Gracie) Peck, who will conduct research in Denmark 
  • School of Medicine Student  Morgan Yapundich, who will conduct public health research in Ghana

The awards are announced on a rolling basis, determined by the host country. This list is current as of May 22, 2023.

The Fulbright Scholarship application process is open to Wake Forest seniors, alumni and graduate and professional students. Nineteen nominations were made by Wake Forest this year.
