Community Gathers for Climb to Remember
The No Fear Battalion, an Army ROTC unit consisting of 70 cadets from Wake Forest University, Winston-Salem State University and Salem College, led a somber yet uplifting tribute on Friday morning. In memory of the victims of the Sept. 11, 2001 tragedy, cadets and members of the Winston-Salem community ran the steps of Allegacy Stadium in the Climb to Remember.
Friday’s gathering, held on the 25th anniversary of the terrorist attacks that shook the world, brought a record 1,594 participants to the stadium from across the region. The Wake Foresters included the University’s ROTC cadets as well as intercollegiate athletics teams, service organizations and other student groups. President Peter Rodriguez joined the crowd.
Community partners included approximately 45 sworn firefighters and 32 recruits from the Winston-Salem Fire Department, all of whom did the climb in full gear weighing 58 pounds per person.
Their journey was neither short nor simple. Ultimately, the participants climbed 2,977 steps – one for every victim in New York City; Arlington, Virginia; and rural Pennsylvania on Sept. 11, 2001.
