Professor waits to hear from Chile

Professor Peter Siavelis, who used to live in Chile, is waiting to hear if former colleagues there are safe after a massive earthquake hit the country on Saturday. The University is not aware of any faculty or students who were in the country at the time of the earthquake.

What romance novels tell us about society and the changing role of women

Nearly 75 million people read a romance novel in 2008, 90 percent of them women. Harlequin, the largest publisher of romance novels, publishes 120 titles a month in 25 languages.
Scholars have recently started to examine this popular, but much maligned genre, and how it reflects the changing roles of women in society.

Demystifying the Writing Process

Author Gustave Flaubert became known for flinging open the shutters and reading his prose aloud to busy streets, desperate to hear his words to get a glimpse of what they sound like on the page. Boisterously reading sections of his latest book, Flaubert anxiously sought clarity and precision in his writing, welcoming criticism and the search for “le mot juste,” or the perfect word. He wanted his thoughts and words to share one meaning.

Michelle Obama may be the first African-American first lady, but in other respects she’s not that different from her predecessors, says Professor of Political Science Kathy Smith, who studies first ladies. “Michelle Obama offers continuity to the past with her traditional interpretation of the first lady role,” says Smith, the author of a chapter on Rosalynn Carter in the book “American First Ladies” and co-author of two books on the American presidency.

Retired professor Eddie Easley dies

Professor Emeritus of Business Eddie Easley died on Jan. 13 in Winston-Salem. He was 82. He is survived by his wife, Ruth, three children and four grandchildren.
