Andrew Manze and the English Concert to perform at WFU during U.S. tour

The English Concert, founded in 1973 by Trevor Pinnock, is Europe’s leading baroque orchestra and holds a worldwide reputation as ambassadors for British performing arts. According to The Guardian (London), “The playing of The English Concert is beyond criticism. The whole can only be described as an electrifying experience.” A pioneer in baroque performance, the orchestra has played in venues around the world, including Europe, the Canary Islands, Japan and South America.

The group is directed by violinist Andrew Manze, who has been called the “Grappelli of the baroque” by BBC Music magazine. Manze, who specializes in repertoire from 1610 to 1830, has become known for approaching period instrument performance with freedom and improvisation. Critics herald him for his imagination, innovation and charm. The Boston Globe called him “the first superstar of the baroque violin since the baroque era itself.”

“Classical music does have ‘hot properties’ and Andrew Manze is one of them. The Secrest Series is delighted to be the first to present him in North Carolina,” said Lillian Shelton, director of the Secrest Artists Series.

A pre-concert talk with Stewart Carter, professor of music at Wake Forest and a specialist in the baroque period, will be held at 6:40 p.m. in the chapel Balcony Room.

Concert tickets are $20 for general admission; $12 for non-Wake Forest students and senior citizens. Tickets are available without charge to all Wake Forest students, faculty and staff.
