WFU student wins Goldwater scholarship

Emily Leonhardt, a Wake Forest University junior from Cincinnati, Ohio, has been awarded a 2005 Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship.

Leonhardt is one of approximately 320 students across the country to earn the scholarship this year. The Goldwater Scholars were selected on the basis of academic merit from a field of 1,091 mathematics, science and engineering students who were nominated by the faculties of colleges and universities nationwide.

The $7,500 federal scholarship recognizes outstanding potential in natural and applied sciences. Leonhardt is majoring in computer science and English. She plans to attend graduate school for computer science.

The Goldwater Foundation is a federally endowed agency established in 1986. The scholarship program honoring U.S. Senator Barry M. Goldwater was designed to foster and encourage outstanding students to pursue careers in the fields of mathematics, the natural sciences and engineering. The Goldwater Scholarship is the premier undergraduate award of its type in these fields.

Leonhardt attended Saint Ursula Academy in Cincinnati. She is the daughter of Mark and Pam Leonhardt of Cincinnati.
