Three Wake Forest University students were named the gold, silver and bronze medal award winners for earning the top three highest scores among all candidates taking the Uniform CPA Examination in North Carolina in May.
A total of 1,531 candidates took the exam on May 6-7 in either Winston-Salem or Raleigh, according to the North Carolina State Board of Certified Public Accountant Examiners. The exam is given twice a year in May and November.
Wayne Smith Jr., who graduated from Wake Forest in May, was named the Gold Medal Award winner for having the highest score in the state.
Smith’s classmate Heyward Armstrong earned the Silver Medal Award for the second highest score while Hope Brackett earned the Bronze Medal Award for the third highest score.
The medal awards are presented by the North Carolina CPA Foundation in honor of the late Katharine Guthrie, executive director of the NC State Board of CPA Examiners for 25 years.
In May, all three students graduated from Wake Forest’s five-year program in the Calloway School of Business and Accountancy to earn a bachelor’s and master’s degree in accountancy.
Smith, the son of Wayne and Elaine Smith of Advance, has joined KPMG in Greensboro. Armstrong, the son of Tommy and Jeanette Armstrong of Lillington, is joining Ernst & Young in Raleigh. Brackett, the daughter of Doug and Pat Brackett of Kernersville, will be working at KPMG in Charlotte.
