Commencement activities at Wake Forest

Approximately 1,466 undergraduate and graduate students will receive diplomas during the outdoor commencement ceremony at 9 a.m. on Monday, May 17, on University Plaza. Commencement is not open to the general public. Parking passes and tickets are required to enter campus and attend the event. Tickets are reserved for graduates and their guests. Parking passes will be mailed to media organizations for those individuals interested in attending commencement. For more information, call the News Service.

INTERNATIONAL CATHOLIC LEADER TO SPEAK

Renowned Roman Catholic leader Cardinal Francis Arinze will deliver the commencement address. Arinze, frequently mentioned as a possible successor to Pope John Paul II, is president of the Vatican’s council for promoting mutual understanding and collaboration between Catholics and followers of other religions.

BACCALAUREATE SPEAKER DEAN OF DIVINITY SCHOOL

Bill Leonard, dean of the Wake Forest Divinity School, will deliver the baccalaureate address during the 11 a.m. service on Sunday, May 16. The divinity school will officially open this fall.

ASSOCIATE JUDGE WITH THE ARMED FORCES TO ADDRESS LAW SCHOOL GRADUATES

Andrew Effron, associate judge of the Court of Appeals of the Armed Forces, will speak during the Wake Forest School of Law’s hooding ceremony, which begins at 1:45 p.m. on Sunday, May 16, in Wait Chapel.

SURGEON, CHIEF OF PROFESSIONAL SERVICES TO ADDRESS MEDICAL SCHOOL GRADUATES

Dr. Timothy Pennell will address the Wake Forest School of Medicine during its hooding ceremony at 4:15 p.m. in Wait Chapel on Sunday, May 16. Pennell is a professor of surgery, director of international health affairs and chief of professional services for the Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center.

CEO OF ANIMAL FOODS COMPANY TO ADDRESS BABCOCK GRADUATES

The hooding ceremony for MBA students from the Babcock Graduate School of Management is scheduled at 7 p.m. on Sunday, May 17, in Wait Chapel. Ronald H. Butler, chairman, president and chief executive officer of Three Dog Bakery, a maker of animal treats, will deliver the hooding address. Butler is a 1984 graduate of the Babcock school’s executive program and member of the school’s board of visitors.

FIVE HONORARY DEGREE RECIPIENTS

Honorary degree recipients include Arinze; Richard Darman, a former Cabinet member for President George Bush and a partner in the global investment firm, The Carlyle Group; Michael DeBakey, a surgeon and teacher whose career includes innovations in cardiovascular surgery and the artificial heart; Betty McCain, secretary of the N.C. Department of Cultural Resources; and Andrew Young, former ambassador to the United Nations, vice chairman of GoodWorks International, former mayor of Atlanta and three-term congressman.

WFDD TO BROADCAST COMMENCEMENT ADDRESS

As a public service, WFDD (88.5 FM) will broadcast Cardinal Francis Arinze’s commencement address in its entirety beginning at 7 p.m. on Monday, May 16. WFDD is Wake Forest University’s National Public Radio member station.
