Established in 2005, the Dean’s Cup recognizes the Wake Forest athletic team with the highest grade point average each academic year. Recently, men’s track and field/cross country and women’s golf celebrated a three-peat. Each team has captured three consecutive titles. Wake Forest golf icon Arnold Palmer received the Congressional Gold Medal at a special ceremony at the U.S. Capitol on Sept. 12. The medal is the highest civilian award in the U.S., along with the Presidential Medal of Freedom, which Palmer received in 2004.
Senior Peter Chawaga will never forget certain things about his first football game as a Demon Deacon. The enthusiasm surrounding games prompted his nostalgia for University traditions, but the home opener against Liberty was really just a backdrop for the pride that wells up inside all Wake Foresters collectively.
Chris Paul scored 11 points to help the U.S. men's basketball team beat Spain to win gold Sunday at the 2012 London Olympics. The gold medal is the second for Paul, who also played on the U.S. team at the 2008 Beijing Olympics.
Webb Simpson ('08) has won the U.S. Open for his first major golf title. The celebration had a Demon Deacon feel, as Simpson shared it with his wife, Dowd ('07), and thanked WFU great Arnold Palmer for providing the scholarship that allowed him to play golf at Wake Forest.
Former Wake Forest track & field standout and Hall of Famer Hunter Kemper qualified for his fourth consecutive trip to the Olympic Games after finishing fifth in the ITU World Triathlon Championship Series. Kemper earned the automatic bid to the London Olympics as the first American to cross the finish line.
Inspiration often comes in unlikely places. For Paul Loeser, a senior cross-country runner, his epiphany hit while on Los Angeles’ Skid Row. Loeser was working with Athletes in Action’s Urban Project when he got the idea to replicate a program he saw there when he returned to Winston-Salem.
For the 26th straight year, Wake Forest student-athletes came together to help needy families as part of the Santa's Helper program. This year, 172 student-athletes, coaches and athletic staff wrapped and delivered presents to 166 families with 586 children and wrapped additional presents for 47 other families with 170 children.
Wake Forest has accepted an invitation to play Mississippi State in the Franklin American Mortgage Music City Bowl in Nashville, Tenn. The game will be played on Friday, Dec. 30 at LP Field and will kickoff at 6:40 p.m. The game will be televised on ESPN.
