Philanthropist Fred M. Kirby II, past president of the F.M. Kirby Foundation and a longtime supporter of Wake Forest, has died. Kirby, who lived in New Vernon, N.J., died Feb. 8 at the age of 91.

This month, Wake Forest is launching a green team initiative. The program encourages departments to select a green team “captain” to evaluate sustainable practices in the office and make suggestions for ways to improve. Ideas might be simple, such as purchasing copy paper with recycled content, or more impactful, like eliminating mini-fridges in individual offices.

Students in Michele Gillespie’s history class are studying the history of work in America by starting with those who make Wake Forest work: staff and faculty. As part of an oral-history project, Wake at Work, students are interviewing about 20 staff members and several professors.
Imad Moustapha, Syrian ambassador to the United States since 2004, met with faculty and students Thursday afternoon before discussing “Prospects for Peace in the Middle East: A Syrian Perspective” in a 6 p.m. public lecture on campus. See video from his visit.

The Wake Forest debate team took the top prize at the U.S. Naval Academy tournament last weekend in Annapolis, Md. Ian Miller (’14) and Ken Bailey (’14) beat Cornell 2-1 in the final round.

Assistant Professor of Physics Timo Thonhauser is one of only eight scholars nationwide to be named a KITP Scholar for 2011–2013. The Kavli Institute for Theoretical Physics is the preeminent international center for advancing theory in science and is directed by Nobel laureate David Gross.

During the summer of 2010, a study was conducted by Wake Forest's Translational Science Institute to assess the role of community gardens and farmers markets in Forsyth County. The research was done to better understand the role that gardens and markets may play in providing healthy food across the county.
